How to find a doctor in Paris PDF Print E-mail

Yes, well, everyone falls ill sometime -- and there's nothing worse than being under the weather in a foreign country where you don't speak the language well.

The good news is that finding a doctor (or a dentist) in Paris is relatively easy, and typically the services are cheaper than what you'd encounter at home.  (Nevertheless, save any and all receipts in case you need to file a claim with your insurer -- many provide some measure of emergency international care.)

You have a few choices when looking for a physician:

  1. If you speak French a bit, you can step into any local pharmacy (visible by the luminous green cross they display), and ask if they can recommend a médecin généraliste.  You might even want to describe your symptoms a bit to help the pharmacist choose someone with specific expertise.  The good thing about this kind of "local" recommendation is that the doctor will be close by.  The slight challenge is that the doctor's English may be below par.  That said, most physicians have some experience with English, and typically you will have not great difficulties.
  2. You can ask friends for recommendations -- or, if you are staying in a hotel, ask at the front desk.
  3. You can contact a physician on the consulate's list of English-speaking doctors.  That list is available here.
  4. In a pinch, you can contact an anglophone hospital directly.  You have a couple of choices in the Paris area:
If you visit a doctor who is not in a hospital or clinic, don't be surprised to find his office to be quite modest -- often located in an otherwise residential building.  Physicians often operate as solo practitioners, quite often without nurses or other staff.  This does not reflect on the quality of care -- which is typically excellent.
